Man who had sex with 14-year-old girl is jailed
Summary
A 23‑year‑old Dublin man was sentenced to two years' imprisonment for defilement after a trial at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. He had pleaded not guilty to defilement of a child under 17, two counts of sexual assault and one of sexual exploitation of a child. The jury found him guilty of defilement, acquitted him of the sexual assault charges and could not reach a verdict on the exploitation charge. Judge Patricia Ryan noted a "great disparity in age" and that the accused knew the victim was 15, and that she was under the influence of alcohol at the time. She back‑dated the sentence to December 2016, ordered the man onto the sex offenders register for ten years, and recorded that he admitted to the act but claimed it was consensual. The man had three prior convictions for minor offences.
