Summary

In 2015, 18‑year‑old Melvin Rattigan, who had no full licence or insurance, drove a green Peugeot onto Lower Dominick Street and collided with cyclist Ms Laura Briggs, who was cycling home from work. Rattigan, who later admitted panic and fled the scene, was found to have turned right from Dorset Street onto Dominick Street without observing Briggs, who had the right of way. Briggs suffered serious injuries, including a hairline skull fracture, and reported ongoing physical and mental effects. Rattigan pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm. The court noted his lack of prior convictions and his status as an inexperienced driver, and adjourned sentencing, remanding him on bail until 22 June. No sentence was imposed in the article.
