Murder accused alleges gardai told witnesses to lie

Summary

During his Central Criminal Court trial, Vesel Jahiri, aged 35, denied murdering his former partner Anna Finnegan, 25, and assaulting Karl Finnegan on 21 September 2012. He claimed that Gardaí had instructed witnesses to lie and had withheld CCTV and forensic evidence supporting his account. Jahiri recounted that he had spoken to Finnegan by phone earlier that day, then entered her home where Karl shouted. He said he was struck by a chair, then a struggle ensued involving knives. Jahiri alleged that he stabbed Finnegan twice or three times after being cut, but stopped when he saw blood. He then drove Finnegan to hospital, where she later died. Jahiri also complained of inadequate medical treatment while in custody at Midlands Prison. The jury was reduced to six men and four women after one juror was discharged. Vesel Jahiri pleaded not guilty.
