Jury in trial of woman accused of murdering former partner told it can return majority verdict
Summary
The jury in the trial of Monika Matracka, 35, charged with murdering her housemate and former partner Michal Rejmer, 38, will resume deliberations at the Central Criminal Court tomorrow. The alleged murder occurred at The Pines, Briarfield, Castletroy, Limerick, sometime between 8 pm on 30 December and midnight on 31 December 2015. The jury has spent three hours and 36 minutes considering its verdict and has been given the option of a majority verdict by Mr Justice Paul Butler, who stated that a unanimous verdict is preferable but a verdict agreed by at least ten jurors would be accepted. Mr Carroll SC opened the prosecution case, noting that Ms Matracka claimed she stabbed Mr Rejmer in self‑defence. Mr Rejmer was reported missing on 6 January 2016 after failing to attend work, and his body was found on 8 January under plastic sheeting at the rear of his house. Monika Matracka pleaded not guilty.
