Prisoner setenced over riot

Summary

In February 2017, Scott Hallion, aged 25, was sentenced to four years in prison for his role in a riot at Cloverhill Prison that caused over €30,000 in damage. Hallion was captured on CCTV holding a shaved piece of perspex and a 21‑year‑old Afghan inmate in a hostage situation. He pleaded guilty to violent disorder, assault causing harm, false imprisonment and criminal damage. The court found he was not a ringleader but was swept up in the mayhem. Judge Melanie Greally described the incident as "disturbing" and "extreme violence", suspended the last 12 months of the sentence on strict conditions, and required the term to run consecutively with a sentence Hallion was already serving. Hallion had 52 prior convictions and was already serving a sentence that was due for release in February 2019.
