Summary

In August 2013 a Dublin man, Thomas Ryan, 32, shot Patrick Charles O'Neill, 51, on Glasnevin Avenue in Ballymun. O'Neill was cycling with a friend when a man in a baseball cap fired a shot at his stomach. Ryan later shot himself with the same gun. O'Neill was taken to a resident's house where a doctor applied a dressing before he was handed to A&E. Ryan was observed by gardai with a large wound on his upper thigh. He admitted to having built up a debt due to drugs and to feeling threatened, saying he would kill O'Neill if he went to the gardai. O'Neill required bowel removal and stayed in intensive care until 11 September. Ryan has 13 prior convictions and was remanded for sentencing next Monday. The court heard that Ryan's remorse was genuine and that he was not a gangland figure. The case was prosecuted by Gerardine Small SC and defended by Michael O'Higgins SC. Thomas Ryan pleaded guilty.
