Jury begin considering verdict in trial of woman accused of murdering former partner
Summary
The jury at the Central Criminal Court began deliberations on the case of Monika Matracka, 35, who is charged with the murder of her housemate and former partner, Michal Rejmer, 38. The alleged killing took place at The Pines, Briarfield, Castletroy, Limerick, sometime between 8 pm on 30 December and midnight on 31 December 2015. Matracka pleaded not guilty, claiming she stabbed Rejmer in self‑defence. Mr Rejmer was reported missing on 6 January 2016 after failing to attend work at MacDonald's in Castletroy; his body was found on 8 January under plastic sheeting at the rear of his house. State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy testified that Rejmer died from bleeding caused by stab wounds to his arms. Mr Justice Paul Butler explained that the jury could return one of three verdicts: guilty of murder, not guilty of murder, or not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter.
