Judge tells murder trial jury they must be unanimous in verdict

Summary

In the murder trial of Arnis Labunskis, the Central Criminal Court jury was instructed by Ms Justice Deirdre Murphy that a unanimous verdict was required. The jury could decide on one of three outcomes: guilty; acquittal; or not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter. Labunskis, a 57‑year‑old Latvian living on Wolfe Tone Street, Limerick, is charged with the killing of 39‑year‑old Dainius Burba on 21 or 22 April 2015. He claims he acted in self‑defence after striking Burba with a coffee‑table leg. Burba's father testified that Burba had brought him into a dark bedroom and repeatedly swung a table leg, forcing him to disarm him. The jury was sent out to deliberate and will resume discussions this afternoon. The case remains at the deliberation stage.
