Prisoner involved in holding fellow inmate hostage during riot

Summary

In February 2017, a 25‑year‑old prisoner named Scott Hallion was captured on CCTV holding a 21‑year‑old Afghan inmate hostage during a riot at Cloverhill Prison that caused over €30,000 in damage. Hallion was seen with his arm around the hostage's neck and a shaved piece of perspex in his hand. The hostage suffered punches, kicks, cuts and a stab with a pen, and was later treated for injuries. Hallion pleaded guilty to violent disorder, assault causing harm, false imprisonment and criminal damage on 29 July 2015. He has 52 prior convictions. The Dublin Circuit Criminal Court adjourned sentencing to 20 February 2018, stating Hallion was not a ringleader but was swept up in the mayhem. The new sentence will run consecutively to his existing term, with Hallion due for release in 2019.
