"Very strong support" for murder accused having assaulted deceased, jury hears

Summary

In the Central Criminal Court, the trial of 57‑year‑old Arnis Labunskis, accused of murdering 39‑year‑old Dainius Burba, progressed on the fourth day. Labunskis pleaded not guilty. Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis testified that Burba's death resulted from a multiplicity of blows—estimated at 19—to his head and face, causing lacerations, extensive skull fractures, and severe brain injury. The cause of death was blunt force injury to the head and face. Forensic scientist Dr Stephen Doak presented evidence of a violent assault, including blood‑stained items and DNA matching the accused. He concluded that the evidence strongly supported the proposition that Labunskis assaulted Burba. The trial is before Justice Deirdre McCarthy with a jury of twelve.
