NI authorities seek surrender of Declan Duffy after arrest here

Summary

Northern Irish authorities are seeking the surrender of Declan Duffy, 43, after his arrest in the Republic on suspicion of false imprisonment. Duffy, who lives on Hannover Street West in Dublin, is due to stand trial at the non‑jury Special Criminal Court on three counts of false imprisonment at The Towers, Garters Lane in Saggart on 9 June 2015, and a charge of violent disorder on the same occasion. His trial is scheduled for October. The High Court heard that Duffy had been serving a life sentence for the murder of British army sergeant Michael Newman in Derby City in 1992, but was released on licence by a Northern Irish parole board in March 2013. He was arrested by Gardai on 5 December 2015 on suspicion of the offences charged in the Special Criminal Court. On 6 June 2016 the Under Secretary of State for Northern Ireland revoked his licence and recalled him to prison.
