Louth man found guilty of making bomb in his shed

Summary

Philip McKevitt, 62, of Dundalk, was found guilty by the Special Criminal Court of possessing explosive substances. The court heard that on May 22, 2010, gardai discovered a trailer in his shed containing two adapted gas cylinders strapped to a wooden frame. Evidence included 52 bags of glucose and a roll of wire described as potential command wire for an IED. Forensic scientist Dr Clara Boland testified that McKevitt's DNA was found on one cylinder handle. McKevitt had denied knowing the items were in his shed, but Justice Isobel Kennedy stated it was "inconceivable" he had not noticed them. During the trial, it was noted that another man, Conan Murphy, 29, had previously pleaded guilty to the same offence and was jailed for six years. McKevitt's case is at the sentencing stage; he was remanded on continuing bail until January 23rd, when he will be sentenced. The matter was adjourned for sentencing and is not yet concluded.
