Summary

A 32‑year‑old man, Fionn Braidwood, was found not guilty by reason of insanity for stabbing his retired psychiatrist mother, Jane Braidwood, to death with a kitchen knife on 20 January 2015 at their Clarinda Park East home. He was also charged with assault causing harm to Ceili Braidwood and Anthony Maguire on the same day. After a 32‑minute deliberation, a jury returned the special verdict on all three counts. The Central Criminal Court, hearing evidence from Dr Sally Linehan, a consultant forensic psychiatrist, noted that Mr Braidwood has been under care at the Central Mental Hospital (CMH) since January 2015 and suffers from paranoid schizophrenia and depression. Dr Linehan reported partial improvement but ongoing low mood, social withdrawal and lack of motivation, and recommended continued inpatient treatment. Justice Carmel Stewart ordered Mr Braidwood to be committed to the CMH for ongoing care.
