Bomb accused told gardai he didn't know anything about cylinders and trailer

Summary

In a Special Criminal Court hearing, Philip McKevitt, 62, of Aghaboys, Mount Pleasant, Dundalk, denied knowledge of a trailer and two gas cylinders found in his shed during a 2010 Garda search. The prosecution alleged that the improvised trailer, containing the cylinders, was intended to cause an explosion. McKevitt, who pleaded not guilty to possession of explosive substances, claimed he had never seen the trailer or cylinders and had no knowledge of their presence. He stated that on the evening in question he had gone to the shed to collect logs for another man, Conan Murphy, and that they were discussing football when Gardaí entered. The court heard that Gardaí had interviewed McKevitt six times, invoking sections of the Criminal Justice Act to draw inferences from his failure to account for the items. The trial continues before Ms Justice Isobel Kennedy, with Judges Sinead Ni Chulachain and James Faughnan.
