Summary

Augustin Ion, a 49‑year‑old taxi driver, was found guilty of sexually assaulting a young woman while transporting her from a city centre pub to her home on the night of 20 November 2014. During the ride Ion groped the woman's breast, held her head back against the car seat, and asked her to sit in the back seat and to allow him to enter her house with her. He also attempted to kiss her on the side of the face and rubbed the back of her head. The woman, who had been drinking, told Ion she was uncomfortable and tried to leave. A jury, after a single day of evidence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, returned a guilty verdict in just under three hours. Ion was released on bail pending sentencing on 23 January, with conditions that he not drive a taxi or apply for a new passport until the outcome of the case. Augustin Ion pleaded not guilty.
