Robber raised meat cleaver at pursing gardai

Summary

Ciaran Kenny, aged 20, pleaded guilty to robbery and possession of a meat cleaver in Crumlin on 30 November 2015. Gardaí Cathal McGeoghan and David Currivan were on duty at a checkpoint in Crumlin when they were alerted to two armed men entering a nearby shop. The officers chased the men in their patrol car and on foot, using pepper spray when the men threatened the cashiers. One man was arrested by McGeoghan, while the other, Kenny, was spotted by a Garda helicopter hiding in a back garden and was subsequently arrested. Kenny was found with a meat cleaver. Judge Elma Sheehan sentenced him to three and a half years, suspending the final nine months on the condition that he engage with the Probation Service. The sentence takes into account any time he has spent in custody. The case was heard at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
