DJ caught with €600k in drugs told gardai he was "runner" in operation

Summary

Derek Mulligan, aged 43, was arrested after Gardaí found over €600,000 worth of drugs in his possession, including €495,000 of cocaine, cannabis resin, ecstasy, prescription medication and mixing agents. He claimed he was a "runner" for a drug operation, saying he owed €30,000 and that he would receive a €500 reduction on his debt if he delivered drugs. Mulligan first appeared in court on 5 February 2014, pleading guilty to possession of drugs for sale or supply. He has two prior convictions for drugs and firearms. Judge Melanie Greally remanded him on continuing bail until 2 December, after noting he had taken responsibility for the drugs but feared naming others. Mulligan also said he was a carer for his elderly parents and that he had been working as a DJ at the time of his arrest.
