Prisoner told brother's legs would be broken if he didn't smuggle drugs
Summary
During a hearing, a court heard that Gareth Carroll, 35, was threatened by inmates that his brother's legs would be broken if he refused to smuggle heroin, Valium and Xanax into Mountjoy Prison. Carroll, who was on temporary release, received the call while his brother was in prison. He returned to the facility and officers found drug paraphernalia in his cell; the drugs fell out of his underwear when he was searched. Carroll pleaded guilty at the Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to possession of €1,497 of heroin, €768 of diazepam and €286 of alprazolam on 10 May 2015.
