Murder accused tells jury that he "lost it' after being attacked by deceased
Summary
Donal Colgan, 65, pleaded not guilty to the murder of David Sheridan, 45, outside Luigi's chip shop on August 17, 2014. He told the jury he had been attacked first by Sheridan and Gary Kinlan, and that he only wanted to frighten them. Colgan said he had a difficult childhood, left Ireland at 15, served in the British Army, and later suffered depression and panic attacks. On the day of the incident he had drunk heavily, went to the chip shop, and after a confrontation with Sheridan and Kinlan he claimed to have been punched and kicked. He then grabbed a knife he found and stabbed Sheridan four times, saying he had no intention to kill but to scare. He admitted lying to Gardaí and that CCTV showed Sheridan backing away before the knife attack. The trial continues before Justice Carmel Stewart and a jury.
