Summary

In a Special Criminal Court hearing, forensic evidence showed firearms residue on Anthony Carroll, 30, of Bishopstown, but not on his co‑accused Brian Walsh, 43, of Ballyphehane. The case concerns the unlawful possession of a Walther pistol, a Smith & Wesson revolver, and 12 rounds of ammunition found in a pencil case in a van stopped on 23 February 2013. Carroll and Walsh pleaded not guilty to possession of the weapons and the ammunition. Forensic scientist Dr Brendan Healy examined residue kits, noting that the tubes contained adhesive tape used on the hands and face of the subject. He confirmed residue on Carroll's samples but none on Walsh's. The trial continues before Judge Paul Butler. The court heard that a firearm must be discharged to leave residue. The accused remain in custody pending further proceedings.
