Mum-of-five fraudulently claimed over €30k in benefits

Summary

Jane Fay, 64, of Bawnlea Avenue, Tallaght, was found to have fraudulently claimed over €30,000 in social welfare benefits in the name of her late cousin, Teresa Royal. The fraud was uncovered in 2015 when a facial‑recognition check matched Fay's photo to a claim under Royal's name. Fay had stopped the fraudulent claims in September 2014 and has since repaid €22,000 to the Department of Social Protection, with an additional €11,534 remaining in a frozen bank account, leaving a balance of €747 outstanding. She pleaded guilty to 38 charges covering claims from April 2010 to September 2014, totalling €34,781 in losses. Fay has no prior convictions and has cooperated fully with Gardaí, providing admissions and testimonials from community members, friends and family. The court adjourned sentencing to February 2 to allow the balance of compensation to be gathered and to review the large number of testimonials.
