On-the-run law lecturer convicted of possessing child porn brings new challenge

Summary

Julian Myerscough, 54, a former law lecturer from Lowestoft, was convicted in Ipswich Crown Court on 30 September 2015 of 13 counts of possessing indecent images of a child and of breaching a Sexual Offences Prevention Order. He fled to Ireland after the verdict, boarding a ferry from Holyhead to Dublin. Gardaí arrested him on 2 October in Dublin under a European Arrest Warrant. A High Court judge ordered his surrender to UK authorities on 29 February, but on 11 March the judge refused leave to appeal. On 21 March Myerscough's lawyers applied under Article 40 of the Constitution to challenge his detention at Arbour Hill Prison. The Governor's counsel expected a decision by 22 March, but the Justice Minister secured a stay of the surrender order on 23 March.
