Psychiatric hospital resident died after being stabbed more than 100 times
Summary
In a psychiatric hospital in Waterford City, Paul Cuddihy, aged 38, was tried at the Central Criminal Court for the murder of Maria O'Brien, aged 55, who was stabbed more than 100 times on 5 September 2014. Cuddihy pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to all charges, including causing serious harm to nurse Breda Fennelly and assault causing harm to nurses Mary Grant and Terry Hayes, and to the assault on fellow resident Mary Nugent. The prosecution, led by John O'Kelly SC, described O'Brien's fatal wound as a jugular vein injury, with head trauma as a secondary cause of death. Nugent survived multiple stab wounds that did not hit an internal organ. The trial, set before Justice Patrick McCarthy and a jury, will continue tomorrow, with psychiatric evidence to be presented.
