Jail term cut for woman who attacked Luas driver with bottle
Summary
Aoife Molloy, aged 25, pleaded guilty to assault causing harm to Noel O'Rourke on a Luas tram on 11 December 2014. She was originally sentenced to four years' imprisonment with the final 18 months suspended. On appeal the Court of Appeal reduced her jail term by six months, citing that her sentence should have been on par with that of her co‑accused, who received four years with two years suspended. The judge noted that the incident involved Molloy and a group of young people who were drinking on the tram, that Molloy struck O'Rourke twice with a bottle and then jabbed him in the lip. O'Rourke suffered a fractured jaw‑eye bone and required stitches. Molloy had seven prior convictions for road‑traffic offences and was under the influence of alcohol and prescription drugs at the time of the assault. The final sentence imposed was four years' imprisonment with the final two years suspended.
