Summary

Three Dublin men were brought before the Special Criminal Court on 16 September 2016, charged with membership of the Irish Republican Army (IRA). Jonathan Hawthorn, aged 44, of Ballintyre Downs, Ballinteer, was arrested on Irishtown Road the previous evening; Detective Garda Rory Geelon testified that he was informed by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) that he would be charged with IRA membership and that Hawthorn made no reply to caution. Donal O Ceallaigh, aged 32, of Beach Road, Sandymount, was similarly arrested on Irishtown Road; Detective Sergeant Eamon Hoey gave evidence that he was informed of the DPP's direction and also made no reply to caution. James Geraghty, aged 60, of Dolphin House, Dolphin's Barn, was arrested on Kevin Street; Detective Sergeant Alan McDevitt testified that Geraghty replied, "I'm not a member of any group," when informed of the DPP's direction.
