Patrick Rea, aged 55 and currently serving a life sentence for murder, has been convicted and sentenced at the Central Criminal Court for the rape and indecent assault of his cousin in County Longford. The offences occurred between 1986 and 1989, when the victim was between five and seven years old and Rea was aged 16 to 19. Mr Justice Paul McDermott imposed a concurrent sentence of 12 years, backdated to January. The judge characterised Rea as a dangerous individual requiring close monitoring and rejected arguments that his youth at the time constituted meaningful mitigation, citing his subsequent serious criminal history. This includes a 1997 rape conviction and a total of 23 other convictions. The victim, who elected to waive anonymity, delivered an impact statement detailing the profound and lasting trauma caused by the abuse. The court heard evidence of the psychological harm sustained over decades as a result of the offences. Rea, who is detained at Midlands Prison, has been subject to strict conditions following sentencing. He is prohibited from any contact with the victim and forbidden from having unsupervised contact with children. A direction for lifetime post-release supervision was made by the court. The case reflects a pattern of serious sexual offences perpetrated against family members that has emerged in County Longford court proceedings in recent years. Several similar cases involving intrafamilial abuse have been prosecuted at the Central Criminal Court, with sentences reflecting the gravity of breaches of trust and the lasting harm inflicted on victims. The conviction and sentencing of Rea adds to his existing convictions for serious offences and represents an additional term of imprisonment on top of his life sentence for murder currently being served.
