Violent criminal who left man with brain injury carried out knife robberies after being repeatedly released on bail

A 42-year-old man with 86 previous convictions has been sentenced to eight and a half years' imprisonment at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court following his guilty pleas to assault causing serious harm, robbery, theft and threatening to kill or cause serious harm. The defendant attacked a man on Phibsborough Road in Dublin, leaving him unconscious and requiring over five months of hospitalisation for a traumatic brain injury. Medical evidence indicated the injury was life-threatening; the victim has since made substantial recovery but retains some cognitive difficulties. While on bail, the defendant committed further offences including knife robberies in Dublin city centre and at Charlestown Shopping Centre in Mayo, where he stole items and threatened security staff. Judge Martin Nolan imposed a five-year sentence for the assault and three and a half years consecutive for the remaining charges. The court heard the defendant has struggled with long-standing drug addiction and alcohol dependency since adolescence, and expressed remorse for his actions.
