'Pillar' of community in bid to overturn conviction for brutal attack on musician

A man from Castleblayney Road in Crossmaglen, County Armagh, has appealed his 2022 conviction for assault causing harm following an attack on a musician neighbour near Castleblayney, County Monaghan, in November 2012. The 65-year-old was sentenced to three years imprisonment after a jury trial. His legal team has challenged the conviction at the Court of Appeal, citing alleged investigative failings including incomplete forensic examination of the scene, loss of evidence materials, and the failure to formally interview the defendant or a defence witness. The prosecution countered that any procedural shortcomings were properly considered by the trial judge before the case proceeded to the jury. The victim sustained serious injuries including multiple facial fractures and permanent vision loss. The presiding judge at the Court of Appeal reserved decision on the appeal.
