'Slender Man': the trials of Gerard Cervi

Gerard Cervi, originally from Dublin, stands accused of murder and attempted murder following a shooting at Bray Boxing Club in County Wicklow on 5 June 2018. During a strength and conditioning class that morning, an armed figure entered the premises dressed in high-visibility clothing and a balaclava, discharging nine shots across the gymnasium. Bobby Messett, a 50-year-old father of three, was fatally wounded in the attack. Boxing coach Pete Taylor sustained serious injuries, including bullet wounds to his chest and bicep, and survived after undergoing hospital treatment and extended medical recovery. A third person, Ian Britton, was also injured. Multiple witnesses present at the time, including a 16-year-old student and regular class participants, observed the gunman systematically scanning the room and firing in sweeping motions before departing. Cervi's trial at the Central Criminal Court encountered significant procedural difficulties. His first trial collapsed in September 2021 after ten weeks when a juror fell ill, reducing the panel below the required threshold. As of May 2023, Cervi had spent over four years in custody awaiting retrial without a confirmed trial date, prompting his legal team to seek bail at the Court of Appeal. The defence argued that the extended period of detention, coupled with anticipated Supreme Court rulings on phone evidence admissibility, warranted reconsideration of bail conditions. The State opposed the application, highlighting evidence that Cervi had purchased a one-way ticket to Malaga at the time of his arrest and made unexplained trips to Spain following the shooting, characterising him as a flight risk. In May 2023, the Court of Appeal determined that Cervi's unusually prolonged custody without trial certainty justified conditional bail release, notwithstanding State concerns about his movement patterns. The case has proceeded through the Central Criminal Court system, with proceedings continuing toward resolution. The incident devastated the local boxing community and left multiple witnesses with lasting trauma.
