At the Central Criminal Court, prosecutors concluded their case against Noel Long, a 74-year-old from County Cork charged with the murder of Nora Sheehan in June 1981. Senior counsel Brendan Grehan told the jury that forensic evidence points inescapably to the accused's guilt. Long has pleaded not guilty to the killing, which occurred over four decades ago. Ms Sheehan disappeared between 6 and 12 June 1981 and was found six days later at Shippool Woods in Cork. The State's case relied substantially on forensic analysis conducted during the intervening decades. Fibres recovered from the victim's clothing matched material from Long's Opel Kadett motor vehicle, while paint fragments from the vehicle were also found consistent with those from the victim. Most significantly, a DNA profile extracted from semen discovered on the deceased matched that obtained from a beanie hat belonging to the accused, with statistical odds of one in 23,000 against the match occurring by chance. The defence mounted a vigorous challenge to the prosecution narrative. Michael Delaney SC, representing Long, emphasised to the jury the unprecedented 42-year delay between the crime and trial. He highlighted that critical exhibits had been lost over the decades, preventing the defence from arranging independent forensic verification of the State's findings and expert opinions. The loss of such material substantially limited the defence's ability to test the reliability of the prosecution's evidence. The trial proceeded at the Central Criminal Court with the jury's verdict pending following completion of both closing addresses. The case represents a significant prosecution of a historical homicide, with forensic science playing a central role in bridging the temporal gap between the alleged offence and the pursuit of justice.
