A woman who lost her family home in County Mayo and was subsequently adjudicated bankrupt has sought to have that bankruptcy annulled following a Bank of Ireland overcharging scandal. The High Court heard that Deirdre Dennis was charged more than twice the correct amount on her mortgage repayments between June 2012 and December 2017. Ms Dennis, who resided at Seaview Terrace, Killala, petitioned for bankruptcy in October 2017, believing she owed approximately €171,000 to the bank. Following a tracker mortgage examination in February 2019, Bank of Ireland acknowledged it had failed to provide Ms Dennis with a tracker mortgage to which she was entitled, apologised unreservedly, and withdrew its bankruptcy claim of €115,000. The bank accepted that its failure contributed to Ms Dennis losing her home. Ms Dennis now rents in Ballina and contends she would not have sought bankruptcy had she possessed complete information from the bank in October 2017. Ms Justice Teresa Pilkington heard the annulment application on Monday.
