Convicted rapist jailed for punching former girlfriend

A 31-year-old man from Ballyshannon, County Donegal, has been sentenced to 12 months imprisonment following his conviction for assaulting his former partner. At Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, the defendant pleaded guilty to causing harm to the woman in Tallaght on 28 July 2016. The assault occurred while their six-month-old child was present on a bed. The incident followed an argument during which the man left the house with their child without the woman's agreement. He was subsequently apprehended near Luas tracks and returned the child safely. Judge Karen O'Connor described the behaviour as violent and aggressive, noting its occurrence in the presence of an infant and the psychological impact on the victim. The court acknowledged the defendant's guilty plea, remorse, and engagement with rehabilitation and counselling services. The defendant has previous convictions including rape.
