Donegal man jailed for three years for raping teenager when he was aged 15

A man from County Donegal has been sentenced to three years imprisonment for the rape of a 14-year-old girl at a youth disco in December 2010, when he was aged 15. The Central Criminal Court heard that he pushed the girl into the ladies toilets and raped her in a cubicle. The victim testified that she repeatedly refused his advances during the disco and that he forced her into the toilet against her will. The defence contended the encounter was consensual and had escalated beyond their intentions, but the woman denied this account. A jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts on charges of rape and sexual assault after two hours of deliberation in January this year. Justice Margaret Heneghan imposed a five-year sentence but suspended the final two years. The judge considered his age at the time of the offence, his cooperation with gardaí, and absence of previous convictions as mitigating factors, though she noted a lack of remorse. He was also ordered not to contact the victim and to undertake two years of post-release supervision.
