A 35-year-old man from Claremorris in County Mayo has been acquitted of murdering his 70-year-old father at their home in May 2012 on grounds of insanity. The Central Criminal Court heard that the accused was diagnosed with severe schizophrenia and had been in receipt of disability allowance. Expert psychiatric evidence established that he experienced paranoid delusions and psychotic symptoms at the time of the alleged killing. The jury returned a unanimous not guilty verdict by reason of insanity following a two-day trial. The court ordered that the accused be committed to the Central Mental Hospital pending a further court appearance. Justice Paul Carney thanked the jury and exempted them from future service.
