Rapist who impersonated garda and threatened to arrest schoolgirl is jailed for six months

Stage: Sentence

Plea: Guilty

Finding: Convicted

Outcome: Convicted; Paul Buckley (45) was jailed for four years in 2005 after a trial at the Central Criminal Court heard he had battered and raped a woman who was making her way home after a night out drinking. Sentencing him today, Judge Martin Nolan said he must give Buckley the "benefit of the doubt" about his motive for approaching the girl. "I can't infer beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant in this case intended to cause harm to the young lady," the judge said. "I can't infer he intended, for instance, to sexually assault her." The judge noted impersonating a garda was a serious offence and he handed down a six-month sentence.
