Jail for man who attacked and strangled pregnant partner

A 36‑year‑old man was jailed for assault causing harm and non‑fatal strangulation of his pregnant partner on 24 December 2023. The incident began after an argument at a pub on 23 December, when the woman left the pub and the man followed her home. While she was on a sofa, he held her neck, punched her eye, and then strangled her, dragging her by the hair into the kitchen where she sustained a cut to her lip and a bloodied nose. She later contacted the Gardaí, who found visible injuries and a bruise on the man's wrist. He had previously pleaded guilty, admitted the assault, and expressed remorse. The court, after hearing his background and mitigating factors, imposed a custodial sentence of two and a half years, with the final 20 months suspended on strict conditions, as a warning to his future behaviour.
