Farmer spared jail over crash that killed woman
A 70-year-old farmer from County Mayo has received a suspended sentence of seven months following his guilty plea to careless driving causing death. Martin Cullina was sentenced at Castlebar Circuit Court on Thursday after the three-car collision on the N17 near Claremorris on 16 May 2024 resulted in the death of a 58-year-old woman. Judge Eoin Garavan described the incident as a serious misjudgement on a dangerous stretch of road and told Cullina he had made a grave mistake. The court heard the victim's vehicle was stationary and indicating to turn when struck from behind. Cullina told gardaí he had not observed the brake lights or indicators, though a witness reported seeing both. The judge imposed conditions including an optician visit and completion of a pro-social driving test but declined to disqualify Cullina from driving, citing his isolation on a 20-acre farm eight kilometres from the nearest town. Cullina has no previous convictions and cooperated fully with gardaí.
