The Court of Appeal has dismissed an appeal by a serving member of An Garda Síochána and his partner against a High Court order requiring them to vacate a property in Co Cavan. The couple had occupied the house at Lock Eala, Loch Gowna since 2012 under an arrangement with the previous landlord. However, businesswoman Sylvia Fox purchased the property at auction in March 2024 following the developer's insolvency. Ms Fox obtained a High Court injunction in February 2025 after claiming she had been intimidated when seeking vacant possession. The defendants argued their lease agreement with the former owner should remain valid, contesting Ms Fox's registered ownership at that time. Mr Justice Donald Binchy dismissed the appeal, finding Ms Fox now held clear title to the property as the registered owner. A four-week stay on the order was granted. The defendants' legal representatives indicated an intention to seek leave to appeal to the Supreme Court.

The High Court approved Personal Insolvency arrangements for former newspaper owner John Sheils and his wife Susan Casey, allowing them to keep and continue paying mortgage on their 702‑sq‑m house, Annamult House, in Bennetsbridge, Co. Kilkenny, until they reach their mid‑eights. The house, rebuilt after a 2009 fire, also serves as their business venue. They owe about €2.9 million to creditors including Start Mortgages, Pepper Finance, AIB, Bank of Ireland, Everyday Finance and Promontoria Oyster. Under the PIA, they will make mortgage repayments for 336 months (28 years). To fund the arrangement, they will sell assets such as a Blackrock house and a Lucan site, and write off roughly €70,000 of debt. The PIA, lasting 13 months, aims to restore solvency after completion. The judge, Mr Justice Mark Sanfey, expressed some hesitation about the long repayment period but approved the plan due to creditor support.

Jake Breen, aged 20, pleaded guilty to ten offences in Kilkenny Circuit Criminal Court for events in Carlow and Kilkenny on 7 November 2016. He used a stolen Toyota Land Cruiser, fitted with false plates, to pick up a hitchhiker who was at the start of a world tour. The vehicle stopped, the hitchhiker got out, and the car drove off with the hitchhiker's property still inside. The hitchhiker was thrown to the ground but suffered only minor injuries. Gardaí pursued the Land Cruiser, which drove aggressively, collided with a Garda car, and then reversed. One co‑occupant was apprehended; Breen fled. Breen was sentenced to five years' imprisonment, with the final year suspended, and banned from driving for ten years. The Court of Appeal dismissed his appeal, confirming the sentence as appropriate for the seriousness of the incident.
