Luke Kruger, 25, was sentenced at Galway Circuit Criminal Court for two incidents of unauthorised vehicle taking and associated offences. He pleaded guilty to charges arising from April 24, 2021, and October 15, 2023. In the first incident, Kruger allegedly took a car with a female passenger, driving 55km before crashing in Connemara while she begged him to stop. In the second, he allegedly bit a taxi driver and damaged a second vehicle before fleeing. Judge Brian O'Callaghan imposed a headline sentence of three years for reckless endangerment, reduced to 12 months. For the taxi offences, he set a headline sentence of two and a half years, reduced to 18 months to run consecutively. The final nine months of this second sentence were suspended. Kruger was jailed for a total of one year and nine months. He was placed under Probation Services supervision for 18 months post-release. The sentence was backdated to January 17, when he entered custody. The judge noted Kruger frightened the passenger and displayed aggression towards the taxi driver, while acknowledging his age and addiction issues as mitigating factors.

Conor O'Flaherty, 25, of Spiddal Park, Ballyfermot, pleaded guilty in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to two burglaries in Chapelizod on 17 July 2022 – one at a private home and one at a medical centre. The first burglary involved a kitchen window smashed at 4 am, with homeowners finding a man holding car keys outside. O'Flaherty was later found at the medical centre, filling his pockets with supplies, after gardai followed an alarm sound. DNA from blood linked him to the earlier crime. He apologized and offered to pay for the broken window. O'Flaherty has two prior convictions and was in custody after missing a court date. The court considered his work record and remorse, and Judge Martin Nolan sentenced him to two and a half years, suspended in full under conditions. The sentence was imposed today.

In 2021, Niall Conneely, 48, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing serious harm and driving without insurance after a crash on 27 October 2018 that left father and son Sanghodara and Manoj Kataram seriously injured. The initial sentencing judge, citing Manoj's "exceptional level of charity" in his plea for mercy, imposed a four‑year prison term but suspended the final three years, ordering 240 hours of community service instead. The Director of Public Prosecutions appealed, arguing the sentence was unduly lenient. The Court of Appeal, after hearing the case, found the original sentence too light and re‑sentenced Conneely to four years in prison, suspending the final three years. Conneely entered a bond for good behaviour for the suspended period and agreed to report to Garda Station as required. The decision was made by Justice Birmingham, Justice McCarthy and Justice Kennedy. The case remains at the appellate stage.

Maire Ni Mhuirnin, a teacher from Páirc, An Spidéal, Co Galway, has brought a judicial review against the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government's decision to grant the Marine Institute a foreshore lease for a renewable energy test facility off the Connemara coast. The lease, approved in August 2017, allows the Marine Institute to construct and operate an electricity generating station for 35 years and to develop a 37.5‑hectare site 1.5 km offshore from Spiddal for testing prototype wind, wave and tidal energy devices. Ni Mhuirnin seeks declarations that the decision contravenes EU directives on environmental impact and the conservation of natural habitats. The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, a notice party, argues that any delay would harm the project's viability and the Marine Institute's role in the State's Offshore Renewable Energy Development Plan.

Two men have been convicted and sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for their involvement in a series of violent offences. Dylan Smith, aged 22, and Daniel Malone, aged 20, pleaded guilty to charges arising from incidents in August and September 2013. In August, they unlawfully seized a taxi on Tubber Lane, Lucan, and subjected the driver to false imprisonment, robbery, and serious assault. The victim sustained a skull fracture and multiple facial injuries. In September, Smith stabbed a bus passenger in the thigh during a robbery at Kylemore Road, Bluebell, and subsequently forced the victim to withdraw €200 from an ATM. Smith was sentenced to six years imprisonment with the final eighteen months suspended, to run consecutively with a sentence from Roscommon. Malone received four and a half years with the final eighteen months suspended. Smith has fifty-seven previous convictions; Malone had one prior conviction. Both defendants expressed remorse, with Smith having engaged in rehabilitation since entering custody.
