The Commercial Court has reserved a decision on an application to hold several directors of DQ Entertainments Ireland Ltd personally liable for about €30 million of the company's debts. Mr Justice Mark Sanfey was asked to order winding up of the firm and to make directors Rashida Adenwala, Tapaas Chakravarti and Sanjay Choudhary, all based in India, personally liable for the debt. The receiver, Mr Patrick Bance, claims that the directors knowingly ran the business recklessly, defrauded creditors, failed to keep proper records, misapplied company money and breached trust. The application was heard before the judge on an uncontested basis; no respondents appeared. The judge reserved his decision, expecting to give judgment shortly. The case also noted that proceedings against two Irish‑based directors were struck out.

Friends of the Irish Environment CLG has obtained permission to bring a High Court challenge against An Bord Pleanála's decision to extend planning permission for a Liquid Natural Gas terminal on the Shannon Estuary. The NGO seeks to quash the five‑year extension granted on 13 July to Shannon LNG Ltd, which would allow the construction of four large tanks, jetties and associated works at Kilcolgan near Tarbet, north Co Kerry. The challenge argues that the planning authority failed to consider significant environmental effects, particularly on local wildlife such as Bottlenosed Dolphins in the Lower River Shannon Special Area of Conservation, and neglected the 2015 Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Act and relevant EU Habitats Directive information. The NGO, represented by John Kenny Bl and solicitor Fred Logue, requests an order quashing the decision and declarations that the Board erred in law. Shannon LNG Ltd and Kerry County Council are notice parties.

Adrian Nestor, 44, from Keamsella, Kilcolgan, was found guilty of dangerous driving causing the death of 66‑year‑old Liam McDonnell and serious harm to Garda Sharon Casserly and Garda Peter Murtagh. He collided with a garda car near Ardrahan on 1 February 2016 while five times over the alcohol limit, with a blood alcohol level of 272 mg. Sentenced by the Galway Circuit Criminal Court to 240 hours of community service, a €1,000 fine and a four‑year driving ban, the Court of Appeal later ruled the sentence was too lenient. The DPP appealed, arguing the suspended four‑year sentence failed to reflect the seriousness of the offence. The Court of Appeal, after hearing counsel, imposed a four‑year prison term with the final two years suspended, sending Nestor to jail for the first time in this case.

The fatal collision occurred near Ardrahan, Galway, on the early hours of 1 February 2016, when Nestor's Audi struck a group of three people, including McDonnell, who had been reported missing from a nursing home. Nestor's blood alcohol level was 272 mg at the time of the incident. Judge Rory McCabe sentenced him to 240 hours of community service instead of a four‑year prison term, fined him €1,000, and imposed a four‑year driving ban. The Director of Public Prosecutions has applied to appeal the sentence, arguing it was "unduly lenient," and the Court of Appeal has set a hearing for 23 July.

The High Court has granted a Mareva injunction freezing assets valued at €2.37 million belonging to a County Galway man, following allegations that he provided false evidence during examination before the Master of the High Court. AIB Mortgage Bank obtained the order against Joe McCaul of Roveagh Kilcolgan and two others. The bank claims Mr McCaul denied involvement in collecting rental income of approximately one million euros from properties between January 2012 and July 2015, stating instead that agents of a private trust handled such matters. However, AIB contends this contradicts documentary evidence, including rent receipts signed by Mr McCaul and records of agreed rent reductions. Mr McCaul owns a shopping centre in Clarinbridge and properties across Galway and County Cavan. A receiver was appointed over the properties following a judgment of €2.37 million obtained in 2015. Similar asset-freezing orders were also granted against Mr McCaul's wife and another individual. Mr Justice Paul Gilligan adjourned the matter for one week.
