'Utterly naive' romance scam victim avoids jail after account used to launder fraud cash

Alida Kuiken, 50, of Knockraha, Cork, pleaded guilty in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to allowing €16,997 of stolen money to be transferred through her bank account on 27‑28 September 2022. The money had been sent by a fraudster who posed as a U.S. marine and claimed to be her fiancé. Kuiken had met him online in February 2021 but never met him in person. She admitted she was "utterly naive" and had transferred the money to an account she believed belonged to the man, later sending it by Bitcoin. Gardaí seized her diary, which listed goals such as paying back the money and finding a husband. The judge accepted her plea on the basis of recklessness and imposed a one‑year suspended sentence, fully suspended, with no custodial term. No prior convictions were recorded.
